Chapter 6

In the basement, Mordecai and Lewis Worrell kicked aside the tools and debris Serge had left on the floor and examined the space where Isak’s body had lain. From there, they moved on to other areas, searching for hidden niches and the secret trapdoor Nicholas had already informed Serge about. Flashlights blazing, they opened it and peered into a narrow, stone-lined tunnel.

Crouching down, Colin squeezed inside and crawled forward as far as he could. He re-emerged covered with dust, but unharmed.

“Just as we suspected,” he said, climbing to his feet and dusting himself off. “The tunnel leads outside. He’s had all night to travel.”

“He’s found another hiding place,” Mordecai agreed, nodding, “but I tend to doubt he’s gone far. The modern world will prove frightening to him. He’ll stay close to what he recognizes.”

“We need to start tracking him, then,” Victoria said. “I suggest we spread out and try to retrace his steps. He may have left clues along the way.”

“Or victims,” Lewis added.

“Exactly. We mustn’t underestimate him,” Mordecai said. “Isak Whickley was probably the first, and certainly the most dangerous, of the wave that hit this area in 1830. His manipulative skills are legendary. In the beginning, the townspeople welcomed him into their homes as a friend. Soon their loved ones began to die in droves, wasting away as they were drained of blood and life.”

“Including your ancestor’s wife.” Victoria turned to Serge. “Be grateful her children survived, or you might not exist at all.”

Under her withering gaze, Serge felt ill. He had been that close to his great-whatever grandmother’s murderer? He still found it hard to believe—though not much weirder than believing a man could transform into a wolf once a month.

“Let us remember, our mission is to eradicate these monsters,” Mordecai said. “They are as dangerous today as then. Perhaps more so, since few people in the modern world even believe they exist. For reasons we cannot determine at present, one was left alive in Moon Lake in 1830. However, we can rectify this unfortunate oversight now. Lewis, you and I will remain behind and seal the house. Victoria and Colin, Serge and Nicholas, you four will scour the woods and check for possible hiding places along the roads. Stay in contact with one another. No one should wander off alone.”

“Understood,” Colin and Victoria said in unison. Nicholas didn’t respond, but fifteen minutes later, he and Serge were trudging through the forest that stretched behind the house, still wearing the gloves and carrying a bundle of stakes.

“The maps I looked at show an old private cemetery back here,” Nicholas said. “Seems like the perfect place to start investigating,”

“Okay.”

They walked on until they stood among a few rows of old gravestones, some bearing the names of Starling ancestors. Serge wondered if any stray Lyalls had found their way there also. Many of the stones were too eroded to make out. A few bore ominous-looking skulls at the top. Had this been one of the places dug up
